The Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT)
There are currently 9 Specialized High Schools in the city. Eight of these schools grant admission based on a student’s score on the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT). For the ninth school, Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, admission is granted based on student audition. If you are interested in taking the SHSAT for possible admission to one of the Specialized High Schools, below are some tips about the exam:
- Go to your guidance counselor to get a copy of the Specialized High Schools Student Handbook. This book will give you a description of each Specialized High School and also lists audition and SHSAT testing dates and locations.
- Ask your guidance counselor for an admission ticket to the exam. This ticket will tell you the date, time, and location of the SHSAT (or for LaGuardia High School, your audition info). The SHSAT is administered at the end of October and beginning of November. The auditions for LaGuardia High School take place during November and December.
- Work with your parents, teachers, and guidance counselors to pick out which schools interest you most and rank them in the order that you prefer. Remember to consider the same factors that you would for any other high school (size, theme, location, etc.)
- If you would like to audition for LaGuardia, you and your family should attend the Showcase Performance on Tuesday Oct. 23rd or Wednesday Oct. 24th at 6pm.
- Don’t forget to complete your High School Application Student Program Choices Worksheet. Your exam will not be reported if you do not have a high school application on file.
- Start studying for the exam early! Take practice tests. After each practice test, review your answers and see which questions you answered incorrectly and why.
- Talk to your guidance counselors and teachers about available tutoring and preparation advice. Tutors and review programs can be expensive, but there are sometimes scholarships and aid available for interested and qualified students.
- On the day of the test, be sure to bring your ticket with you. Complete the answer sheet, which requires you to rank the high schools to which you are applying. Do not show up to the test late. You will not be allowed to take the exam if you are late.
- You will be notified of acceptances in February of 2007. You then must choose to accept or decline an offer from the school(s) to which you were accepted. Whichever offer you accept will be your new high school.
