     Research Checklist

Use the checklist below as you research and apply to high school as a guide for important things to find out about each school.



Basic Information


___What priorities are given to students in the admissions process? (For example, is there priority given to students who live in a certain borough or area?)

___What are the requirements for admission to the school or program (screened, audition, etc)?

___If the school or program is screened, does the student meet the requirements listed in the directory?

___What academic themes and programs are offered at the school? What is the school's overall mission?

___How long does it take to get to and from school (by train, bus, etc?).

___Does the school have its own building, or is it part of a larger campus?

___How many students attend the school?

___What kind of extracurricular and athletic programs are available?

___Is there a uniform dress code requirement for the school?

___HAVE YOU AND YOUR STUDENT VISITED THE SCHOOL?



School Academic Evaluation


___What is the graduation rate of the school or program to which the student is applying?

___How many students from the school are accepted into and attend college? How many attend 2 or 4 year colleges or plan to work after graduation?

___ How well do the school's students perform on the Regents Exam? The SAT?



Other Services


___What kind of career and guidance counseling are available?

___What kind of tutoring programs are available?

___What do the school's students and their parents say about the school?

___Have you looked at the school’s annual report card on the DOE website?


Private / Parochial
(in addition to all of the above questions:)

___What is the specific mission of the school, and what is most notable about the education it provides its students?

___If the school is a private school, how much is tuition? Are scholarships or financial aid available through the school?

___Do the schools you are interested in require the applicant to take entrance exams (TACHS, SSAT, or ISEE)? Is the student registered and prepared for the exam?
